Tales From a Revolution: Delaware

Caspar escapes an American ambush on his Hessian company, and builds a new life for himself as a tailor. When his old sergeant shows up after the peace treaty is signed, he must confront the question of how former bitter foes learn to live together.
The sound, like a swift, buzzing bee, passed by his ear and caught Caspar Schmidt's attention before the first crack of a musket's fire reached him. It wasn't until the man who had been glumly marching beside him fell groaning to the ground that he realized that the two noises had been associated, and that they were under attack.
READ MOREThere was no time to shoulder his own musket and return fire. Another volley sounded from the woods, and more men fell wounded around him. He heard an odd metallic bang as one man's high, decorative hat was struck by a musket ball, and Caspar dropped to the ground to avoid suffering the same fate. He rolled away from the muddy road and into the wet grass along the verge, the wild thought striking him that all of his attention to the cleanliness and upkeep of his uniform was now for naught.
He now heard his officers shouting orders and the deafening report of Hessian muskets finally answering the Americans, but the tall grass into which he'd rolled blocked his fellow soldiers from view. Indeed, he felt a curious sense of detachment from the action unfolding just a short distance from where he lay, the damp soaking through his clothing and reaching his skin.
