The novels of the Tales From a Revolution series tell the story of the American Revolution through the lives of ordinary people caught up in it. Set across the thirteen colonies and beyond, they invite us to look beyond the familiar Founders and battlegrounds and discover people, places, and perspectives that are too often overlooked in our conventional histories.
My approach to these stories is pretty straightforward. The events are as accurate as I can possibly make them, but the characters are largely of my own (deeply informed!) imagination. This leaves me the freedom to put ordinary people into the pages the historical record has left blank, and imagine with them what it might have felt like to take part in those events, or simply to have their lives turned upside-down by them.

Meet the Author
I’ve been writing about the American Revolution for nearly two decades, following my curiosity into places and stories I hadn’t encountered in the histories I grew up with. What began with one novel set in South-Carolina has grown into a body of work spanning the thirteen colonies and far beyond them.
Along the way, my historical work has appeared in the Journal of the American Revolution, and I’ve spoken to audiences around the country about the broader history behind these stories. I’ve also appeared as an expert on national television, including one program that earned an Emmy nomination.
I keep coming back to the same question: What did the Revolution look like to the people who never made it into the history books?
