Prosper has enough to deal with on his plantation already... and then God speaks to him, and commands him to take a radical step toward freedom for all Americans, starting with his own enslaved field laborers.
It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when God first spoke to Prosper Creale. Prosper whirled around, looking for whatever prankster had crept up on him to quote Scripture with no context. He stood alone, surrounded by ten open acres or more of unplowed soil, broken up only by rivulets of water, refreshed by another band of rain that swept over the field toward him.
His eyes narrowed, and a deep frown came over his face, creasing the early-developing lines between his eyebrows. He had heard about people who heard voices from nowhere, and he didn't particularly want to find himself in their company.
